period of time - an amount of time;
period - An interval of time;

Oxforddictionaties put it the same way:

A length or portion of time.

In other words:
period of time = period

It is redundant epithet*.

*Only exception - a situation where you'd have really strong urge to use word "period" as "full stop" in one sentence with "period" as chunk of time (which won't happen in normal conversation).
